Screens react to movement in this interactive installation. You can recognise abstract Eastern Swiss motives and Chinese knitting mills. The structure, behaviour, and hence the action of the screens is embedded in Switzerland and China. Opening and associated presentation of colour and form displays similarities to the opening of a lotus flower. The wooden structure of the individual objects is, even if in a simplified and mechanical appearing form, to the design of Chinese oiled paper umbrellas
Artist
Giacomo Pedemonte, 1991, received the Bachelor’s degree in Interaction Design at the Zurich University of the Arts. The interactive installation designed by him was realised with the help of his fellow students Marco Lüthi and Fidel Thomet. Even the space flows into the overall design: 17 screens spread over the ceiling of the well-frequented passageway, forming a sea of flowers, which, accompanied by music, has a poetic effect on the passers-by.
Location
The Haus Appenzell is run by the Ernst Hohl-Cultural Foundation. It sees itself as a showcase of eastern Swiss culture and as initiator and sponsor of various promotional activities. The foundation’s activities are characterised by tradition, cosmopolitanism and quality as well as a cultural-bridging element. Haus Appenzell was built in 1911 by the architects Huwyler and Cuttat in Neo-Renaissance style and for decades was the leading period-furniture speciality store in Switzerland. In 2006, it was transferred to the Ernst Hohl-Cultural-Foundation.
