For his latest body of work, Botero has turned his attention to the iconic depictions of female saints from the Christian canon, reinterpreting one of the quintessential genres of Western art history through his unique style by which these revered unearthly heroines reemerge as distinctly worldly society ladies. Botero chose the city’s patron saint and protector Regula for the Summer Festival 2015 who was amongst others punished for her faith by torture through the breaking wheel.

Fernando Botero, born in 1932 in Colombia, is an internationally renowned modern master, celebrated by the press who has become best known for his voluminous sculptures and figural depictions. His unique, recognizable style is universally admired and adored. His paintings and sculptures are rooted deeply in the art history of the west, but its international resonance is due to his unique ability to create timeless tableaus that traverse standard perceptions of place-based culture.
Location
The Galerie Gmurzynska is an international art gallery with locations in Zurich, Zug and St. Moritz. It specializes in modern and contemporary art as well as Russian avant-garde art. The building is located at the most important square in a prominent location in the city and in the historical centre, right next to the former Galerie Dada, which was completed in 1917 by Hugo Ball and Tristan Tzara.
